Guide to Caring for Your Dentures and Denture Adhesive

Your Daily Routine for a Healthy Smile

Remember: use denture adhesive only if needed for a secure, comfortable fit.

Nighttime Routine (before bed)

Step 1: Remove the Denture

  • Place a clean towel over the sink to cushion the denture if it slips—this helps prevent fractures.
  • Gently remove your denture and hold it firmly.
  • Rinse with water to remove food debris or any denture adhesive.
  • Clean with a denture brush and a special liquid soap/cleanser. Yes—soap. Regular toothpaste can scratch dentures and even make them porous.
  • In our office, we provide all the cleaning products you’ll need when we deliver your dentures and show you exactly how to use them.

Use a dedicated denture brush with mild (neutral) soap to clean your denture without damaging it.

Step 2: Denture Cleaning

IMPORTANT! Never use your regular toothbrush or regular toothpaste on your denture.

What you’ll need:

  • A special denture brush (softer and designed for this purpose)
  • Neutral/mild soap or a denture-specific cleanser
  • A clean, deep container

How to do it:

  • Brush GENTLY over the entire denture—inside and out. Think of it as brushing your mouth: don’t skip any area, especially the inner surface where denture adhesive may remain.
  • Pay special attention to areas that contact the gums, the spaces between teeth, and clasps on partial dentures.
  • Use the dedicated brush and a clean container to keep your denture free of bacteria and in optimal condition.

Step 3: Overnight Disinfection — keep dentures out of the mouth

Your denture needs a deeper clean at night. Here are the types of tablets you can use:

  • Fill a clean container with water (never hot—heat can warp the denture).
  • Add a denture-specific cleansing solution or—my favorites—
  • Effervescent denture-cleaning tablets.
  • Fully immerse the denture.
  • Leave it to soak overnight.

Effervescent tablets are recommended for thorough overnight disinfection.

Step 4: Clean Your Mouth

Your mouth needs as much care as your denture!

  • Use a soft toothbrush dedicated only to your mouth.
  • Gently clean your:
    • Gums
    • Tongue
    • Cheeks (inside surfaces)
    • Palate—this helps remove food debris, bacteria, or any remaining denture adhesive.
  • Use regular toothpaste for this step.
  • Finish with mouthwash if you like.

Step 5: Morning Routine

  • Rinse the denture well with water.
  • Clean your mouth as in Step 4.
  • Insert the clean denture.

Which denture adhesive is best?

Dentures are an excellent option to restore function and esthetics when some or all teeth are missing. In certain cases, they may need additional retention to improve stability and prevent movement while speaking or eating. That’s where denture adhesive plays an important role.

There are several adhesive types on the market, each with features that may suit different needs:

  • 🔹 Powder adhesive: Activates with saliva to form a strong, durable film. Moisture-resistant and usually neutral in taste, but a bit trickier to apply correctly without practice.
  • 🔹 Cream adhesive: Comes in a tube and is applied to the denture base before insertion. Its texture allows even distribution and immediate hold. The effect can diminish over time, so you may need to reapply during the day.
  • 🔹 Adhesive pads/strips: A practical, easy alternative. They sit between the denture and the gums, providing comfortable retention without liquids or creams. Ideal for simplicity, but must be replaced frequently to remain effective.

Choosing the right adhesive depends on your comfort, ease of application, and how long you want the hold to last. Remember, proper denture fit is fundamental to avoid sore spots and mucosal problems. If your denture feels loose, causes discomfort, or you’re unsure which adhesive to use, book an appointment with me. The right fixation can make a real difference in your quality of life and the confidence of your smile.

Dr. Stefany Lince’s recommendation
My preferred option is cream adhesive: it’s easy to use, allows precise application at specific points, and is straightforward to remove—giving quick, comfortable fixation and enhanced denture stability without complications.
