Precision Dental Splints & Night Guards by a Rehabilitation Specialist
Scientifically designed protection against bruxism. A custom hard night guard fitted for your unique bite mechanics.
The Smart Investment: World-Class Protection
- When patients research how much does a dental night guard cost, the figures provided by local providers often seem disproportionate to the device itself. However, the efficacy of a dental splint vs night guard relies entirely on two factors: the precision of the impression and the quality of the polymer. Dr. Stefany Lince offers a transparent alternative. By visiting Cali, you access a custom night guard for teeth grinding fabricated with the exact same high-grade materials used in North America and Europe. The difference in the custom night guard cost is not a reflection of the product quality, but rather an adjustment for local operational expenses. We specialize in the occlusal splint dental protocol—a medical-grade approach distinct from over-the-counter solutions. Whether you require a hard plastic dental night guard for severe bruxism or a specific dental splint bruxism therapy, the fabrication process is overseen by a Specialist in Oral Rehabilitation. This ensures your custom hard night guard provides the necessary protection for your temporomandibular joint without the excessive markup found in other markets.

FAQs
How much is a night guard from the dentist compared to yours?
In the U.S., a custom night guard from a dentist usually ranges around $400–$800 USD.
With me in Cali, Colombia, a custom, laboratory-made night guard is usually around $180–$250 USD, depending on the case and type of material. You receive the same professional, personalized treatment and follow-up, but at a significantly lower cost.
What is the difference between a dental splint vs. night guard?
Great question! I’ll explain it simply:
A night guard is usually:
Designed mainly to protect the teeth from grinding or clenching (bruxism).
Worn only at night.
Focused on preventing wear, fractures, and sensitivity in the teeth.
A dental splint (occlusal splint) is usually:
A more therapeutic, medical appliance.
Designed not only to protect teeth, but also to stabilize the bite, relax muscles, and help with TMJ (jaw joint) problems, headaches, or facial pain.
Often requires more detailed adjustment and follow-up.
Both are custom-made, but a splint is typically more specialized and part of a broader treatment plan, while a night guard is mainly for protection from grinding.
How long does it take to make a custom night guard?
For a custom night guard with me, it usually takes:
First visit: exam + impressions or digital scan (about 30–40 minutes).
Lab time: around 3–7 days for the guard to be fabricated.
Second visit: try-in and adjustments (about 20–30 minutes).
So in total, you can expect your custom night guard to be ready in about one week.
Do you use hard or soft materials?
I mostly use hard, rigid materials (usually a hard acrylic or hard thermoplastic) because:
They protect the teeth better
They last longer
They allow precise adjustments to improve your bite and relax the muscles
In some specific cases (very sensitive teeth, temporary use, or certain medical conditions) I may indicate a softer or mixed (dual-layer) guard, but for bruxism and long-term protection, I generally prefer a hard custom splint.
Can I just buy a night guard online vs. dentist made?
You can buy one online, but it’s not the same as a dentist-made guard.
An online/boil-and-bite night guard is:
Cheaper, but
Not truly customized to your bite
Can be too bulky, loose, or unstable
May even change your bite or worsen jaw pain if used long term
A dentist-made night guard is:
Individually designed for your teeth and jaw
Adjusted in the clinic so it fits precisely and comfortably
Safer for your TMJ, muscles, and bite over time
For occasional, short-term use, an online guard may be okay.
For real bruxism, headaches, or long-term protection, I strongly recommend a custom guard made and checked by a dentist.
Will this help with my TMJ pain?
A properly designed occlusal splint / night guard can definitely help with TMJ pain, but it’s not a magic cure for every case.
What it usually does is:
Reduce pressure on the jaw joint
Relax the chewing muscles
Protect teeth from grinding and clenching
Many patients notice less pain, fewer headaches, and less morning tightness.
However, TMJ pain can have multiple causes, so I always need a full evaluation (clinical exam, bite analysis, sometimes imaging) to confirm if a splint alone is enough or if we should combine it with physiotherapy, exercises, or other treatments.
How long will my custom guard last?
A well-made custom night guard usually lasts 3–5 years on average.
However, it depends on:
How much you grind or clench
The material (hard guards last longer than soft ones)
How well you care for it (cleaning, storing, not biting it during the day)
Some patients need a replacement sooner (2–3 years) if they have very heavy bruxism, and others keep theirs in good condition for even longer with proper care.
Does the process hurt?
No, the process does not hurt 😊
During the appointment: we only take impressions or a digital scan of your teeth and then try in the splint. There are no injections, no drilling, and nothing invasive. You may feel a bit of pressure from the material, but not pain.
First nights at home: it’s normal to feel your muscles “aware” of the new appliance or a little tired when you wake up, but this usually improves in a few days as your jaw adapts.
If you feel any discomfort, I simply adjust the splint until it feels comfortable and stable.
