FAQs

The investment for professional teeth whitening at my office in Cali, Colombia usually ranges around USD $150–$250 for an in-office treatment, depending on:

  • Your starting tooth shade and desired result

  • Whether we combine in-office whitening + take-home trays

  • If you first need a cleaning or other treatments before whitening

👉 What I include:

  • Complete dental evaluation (to check cavities, old fillings, sensitivity, etc.)

  • Professional cleaning if needed (can be billed separately)

  • In-office whitening with high-quality, safe materials

  • Personalized care instructions to help you maintain your results longer

If you send us a few photos of your smile, I can give you a more accurate quote in advance and help you plan your visit to Cali.

Great question 💫

For most patients, professional teeth whitening results last between 1 and 3 years, but it really depends on your habits and oral care.

Results last longer if you:

  • Have a good hygiene routine (brushing + flossing daily)

  • Limit coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, and smoking

  • Keep your regular cleanings with the dentist

  • Use touch-up whitening (when indicated) once or twice a year

You may notice a slight fade over time, which is completely normal, but your teeth will almost always stay lighter than before the treatment if you take care of them.

When you come to my office in Cali, I’ll also give you personalized aftercare tips based on your lifestyle so you can keep your smile bright for as long as possible. ✨

That’s a very important question 🦷✨

No – professional whitening does not change the color of veneers, crowns, or fillings.
Whitening products only work on natural tooth enamel, so:

  • Porcelain veneers, zirconia crowns, and ceramic restorations keep the same color

  • Composite fillings or bonding also do not get lighter

  • What can happen is that your natural teeth get whiter and your old restorations start to look darker or more yellow in comparison

🔍 What I usually recommend:
Before whitening, I evaluate:

  • How many veneers/crowns you have

  • Where they are located (especially in your front smile)

  • Their current color

Sometimes the best plan is:

  1. Whiten your natural teeth first, and

  2. Later replace the old veneers or crowns that no longer match your new, lighter smile.

If you send me photos of your smile, I can tell you if whitening is a good option for you, or if we should plan a combination of whitening + new restorations for the best aesthetic result.

Love this question, because there is a big difference

1. Whitening at the dental office

With professional in-office whitening (like we do at my clinic in Cali):

  • Stronger products: We use a higher concentration of whitening gel that you cannot buy in pharmacies.

  • Faster results: You usually see a visible change in 1 single appointment (about 60–90 minutes).

  • More control & safety: I protect your gums and soft tissues, and I adjust the time and strength of the gel depending on your sensitivity and enamel.

  • Better for dark or resistant stains: Ideal if you want a noticeable change in a short time, for example before a trip, wedding, or special event.

2. At-home kits (store-bought)

Kits you buy online, in pharmacies, or supermarkets:

  • Lower concentration gels → results are usually slower and more limited.

  • One-size-fits-all trays or strips that don’t fit perfectly.

  • Higher risk of gum irritation or uneven whitening if used incorrectly.

  • Many people get frustrated because they don’t reach the shade they expected.

3. Professional take-home trays (from the dentist)

This is different from store kits. Sometimes I combine in-office whitening with:

  • Custom-made trays that fit your teeth perfectly.

  • A safe professional gel for you to use at home for a few days or weeks.

  • Great to maintain and boost your in-office results.

In summary:

  • In-office whitening = faster, stronger, more controlled and predictable.

  • Store at-home kits = weaker, slower, less precise, and with more risk if you don’t know how to use them.

  • Best option for most patients: in-office whitening, sometimes combined with custom professional trays for long-lasting results.

If you’d like, you can send me photos of your smile, and I can recommend the best option for you before you plan your trip.

Most patients tell me it does not hurt, but you may feel temporary sensitivity during or after the whitening – like a quick “electric” sensation in some teeth.

Here’s how we handle it at my office:

  • I do a full check-up first to see if you have exposed roots, cavities, or very sensitive teeth.

  • We use high-quality gels designed to reduce sensitivity.

  • I can apply a desensitizing product before and/or after the session.

  • If you tend to be very sensitive, we can adjust the time or intensity of the treatment.

Any sensitivity you might feel usually lasts only a few hours to 24–48 hours, then it goes away completely.

My goal is always the same: a whiter smile with the least possible discomfort, and I’ll adapt the protocol to your case so you feel safe and comfortable during your visit.

With professional in-office whitening, most patients see a clear difference in just 1 session

However, the exact number of sessions depends on:

  • Your starting shade (how dark or yellow your teeth are now)

  • The type of stains (coffee, tea, smoking, age, etc.)

  • How white you want to go

🦷 Typical scenario in my office in Cali:

  • 1 session: Visible, natural-looking whitening for most patients.

  • 2 sessions: For darker teeth, very strong stains, or patients who want a more intense change.

During your evaluation, I compare your teeth with a shade guide, take photos, and then I can tell you how many sessions you realistically need to reach a beautiful, healthy white that still looks natural.

This is a very important question, and I’m glad you asked 💛

Current scientific evidence on teeth whitening during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited, so as a responsible dentist my recommendation is:

During pregnancy 🤰

I do not perform cosmetic whitening on pregnant patients.
Not because it’s proven to be dangerous, but because we don’t have enough strong studies to guarantee 100% safety for the baby.
In pregnancy we only do strictly necessary treatments, and whitening is considered elective / aesthetic.

During breastfeeding 🤱

Most whitening gels act only on the teeth and are not meant to enter the bloodstream, but again, we don’t have long-term studies in breastfeeding mothers.
My usual approach is:

  • If it’s possible, wait until you finish breastfeeding.

  • If you really want to whiten sooner, we would first have a detailed evaluation, talk about risks vs. benefits, and only proceed if everything is stable and you feel completely informed and comfortable.

My honest advice as a specialist:
For both pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safest and most conservative option is to postpone teeth whitening and focus instead on:

  • Professional cleanings

  • Excellent home hygiene

  • Controlling stains from coffee, tea, etc.

Once this special stage is over, we can safely plan a whitening treatment to brighten your smile ✨

That’s a key question if you’re comparing options 🦷✨

1. Professional teeth whitening (at the dentist)

What I do in my clinic in Cali:

  • Stronger and controlled gel: We use high-concentration whitening products that are not available over the counter.

  • Fast, predictable results: You usually see a noticeable change in 1 visit (about 60–90 minutes).

  • Personalized and safe: I protect your gums, check for cavities or sensitivity first, and adapt the protocol to your teeth and goals.

  • Before/after photos: We compare your shade to ensure the result is real and not just “perception.”

2. Whitening strips

  • Lower concentration of bleaching agents.

  • One-size-fits-all → They don’t adapt perfectly to your teeth, so results can be uneven.

  • Can irritate gums if placed incorrectly.

  • You usually need many days or weeks to see a smaller change.

They can work for very mild stains, but they’re not comparable to a professional treatment.

3. Whitening toothpaste

  • Most whitening toothpastes work mainly by abrasion (polishing surface stains).

  • They don’t change the internal color of the tooth.

  • Good as maintenance after a professional whitening, but not enough if you want a real shade change.

In summary:

  • Professional whitening = deeper, faster, more controlled and safer, with visible results.

  • Strips and toothpaste = mild improvement or stain removal only, limited power, and no professional evaluation behind it.

If you send me photos of your smile, I can tell you if you’d benefit more from a full professional whitening or if a lighter approach is enough for you.

That’s a very common fear – and the answer is no, your teeth don’t have to look fake after whitening 😊

With professional whitening, we control the final shade. My goal is always a smile that looks:

  • Brighter, but still natural

  • In harmony with your skin tone, lips and face

  • Not “chalky white” or artificial

During your visit I:

  • Show you a shade guide so you can see different natural whites

  • Recommend a color that gives you a fresh, clean look without being exaggerated

  • Stop the process when we reach a shade that looks healthy and elegant, not fake

If you tell me you want a very natural result, I will always stay on the more conservative side so your smile looks like your smile—just cleaner and brighter ✨
